Chair Pose – Utkatasana
Utkatasana, commonly known as Chair Pose, is a dynamic and powerful asana with roots deeply embedded in traditional yoga practices. Derived from the Sanskrit words “utkata,” meaning “powerful” or “intense,” Utkatasana translates to “the powerful pose.” This asana is a staple in various yoga sequences and is particularly renowned for its capacity to build strength and endurance.
Mythological History:
While we commonly call it Chair Pose, it’s origins and the stories told are actually about a throne! HIstorically in India, chairs were not common and most sat on the floor. Kings, Queens, and any position of royalty sat on elevated chairs, or thrones, in order to elevate themselves above the others so they were easily seen. This was for the purpose of darshan — the act of seeing and being seen that connected royalty to their people.
The story is of Lord Rama and his exile from his kingdom. His stepmother, Queen Kaikeyi, decided after the death of the King, that her own son, Bharata; was the true heir to the throne and banished Lord Rama. Bharata, however, felt he was undeserving of the role and refused to occupy the throne. Instead, he placed a pair of Rama’s sandals upon the throne as representation of who it truly belonged to. It was to show the people that Bharata believed Rama was the true king and that he would do his best to fill his shoes in his absense.

Aligning Your Chair Pose…
Fun Fact…
Utkatasana, the sanskrit word for Chair Pose, translates to “fierce, proud, intense, immense and/or superior pose,”
1. Sit back into your chair pose, making sure your knees stay behind the toes.
2. With all toes pointing forward, allow your weight to sink back into your heels. Try not to grip your toes, allow them to float of the mat for a moment before gently placing them back down.
3. Strong core and active spine are key here! Create length from tailbone to the top of your head, draw the navel in to engage your core and avoid a bend in your low back. Squeeze your shoulders back and down away from your ears.
4. Gaze forward and slightly down to elongate the neck.
5. Reach your arms forward and up, think biceps surrounding your ears. Turn your pinky fingers in to activate and stretch the triceps.
