Modern Yoga Teacher spotlight

Mary Beth is about to turn 53, a lifelong resident of suburban northeast Ohio, and she has been doing yoga regularly for nearly 15 years.

“In addition to yoga, I love traveling, writing, animals, cooking, stand-up paddle boarding, and spending time with my grandkids and other babies in the family”.

What inspired you to become a yoga teacher?

The colossal influence my yoga teacher and my yoga practice had on the quality of my life.

What kind of trainings have you pursued?

I’m currently finishing my 500-hour yoga certification and have enjoyed workshops specific to trauma, grief, and inversions. I am also a level 1 SUP (stand-up paddle) instructor.

What is one piece of advice for your students?

Let go. Stop thinking and let go of any attachment to what you think you should look like while you practice.

What is your favorite asana and why?

It changes constantly! That’s my favorite part. Favorites have ranged from Warrior I, to traditional headstand, from Crow to big-toe hold, even to chaturanga! Balancing half-moon always rises to the top of my list. It’s so hard and so easy. So engaged but so open and accessible. Sthira-Sukha

What is your favorite yoga related book?

The countless personal notebooks of quotes and reminders scattered around my house and car.

What is one thing most people don’t know about you?

My middle toes on both feet are webbed. And my weight as an adult has fluctuated more than 50 pounds. And I keep an active license to sell insurance!

What are you really passionate about (Outside of the world of yoga)?

My faith. Nature. Animals. Laughter. Compassion. Doing something, however small, to give back. I like connecting with people. I don’t want anyone to feel alone if they don’t want to be.
