My prenatal yoga journey

By Jenny Surovey

Everyone’s yoga journey is different. Mine started my first semester in college when I needed to fulfill a PE credit and was never a fan of gym class. I quickly fell in love with the yoga philosophy and the way I felt both physically and mentally after class.

I fell in and out of my hatha practice throughout the years, trying different styles of yoga and joining new studios. When I started at Modern Yoga, I found an amazing yoga community and I knew from that point on yoga philosophy and vinyasa yoga would play a big part in my life.

The Modern Yoga Community

I started the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program at Modern Yoga in 2019 and taught my first vinyasa class Christmas morning that year. It has been an amazing journey that has led me to discover much more about yoga and even myself.

I have been grateful to have the opportunity to teach at the studio this year despite the impacts COVID-19 has had on our lives and our local businesses. The yoga community has really been a safe and supporting place for us all during this pandemic.

Thankfully, my husband and I had a shining light come through this year. We are expecting a baby girl this April!

Pregnancy & Yoga

As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I started wanting and needing to know more about pregnancy and childbirth and all the safe and effective yoga techniques for moms to be. I signed up for my 85-hour Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training and am rounding out this year with the completion of that certification.

Pregnancy can be a wonderful but overwhelming experience and it is important for us to have a community and the right tools to help us cope with the physical and emotional changes that pregnancy can bring. I am so excited to share my experience and provide expectant mothers with the skills to not only ease the discomforts of pregnancy but prepare them for labor.

The Benefits of Prenatal Yoga

Throughout the three trimesters of pregnancy, the body experiences physical changes which happen in stages to support the physiological self. Prenatal yoga practice can help increase flexibility, strength and endurance to the muscles needed for childbirth, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and decrease lower back pain, nausea, headaches, and shortness of breath. Yoga will help the body with cardiovascular and respiratory efficiency, endocrine and gastrointestinal functioning, immunity, and hand eye coordination and balance.

While prenatal yoga can have many physical benefits, it also provides us with a sense of community and a place for us to share and help each other become mentally prepared for labor and postpartum. At Modern Yoga, we want to empower expectant mothers to feel safe and strong and be able to provide the same for their baby.

What to Expect in a Prenatal Class

Our classes begin with circle time which allows students an opportunity to share about their pregnancy and discuss any challenges from the previous week. From there, the class will start with gentle stretching, breathing exercises and meditation. We will move right into a series of standing and seated asanas and end the class with restorative postures and relaxation.

Join us on the mat on Sundays from 3-4PM classes begin Jan 3rd, 2021.

Bring 2 yoga blocks & a blanket to class. Due to covid restrictions we are limited in offering items to borrow. Class size is limited to 15 mats, please sign up in advance to reserve your space!
