Santosha: Contentment

Santosha & Tapas: Growing Through Contentment and Discipline

As we continue our inward journeyโ€”having begun with Saucha, the practice ofย  cleansing and clearing space in body, mind, and spiritโ€”we now step into two moreย  Niyamas: Santosha and Tapas. These practices help us cultivate a grounded, steadyย  form of gratitude rooted in both ease and intentional effort.

From Sanskrit san (completely) + tosha (contentment), Santosha literally meansย  complete contentment. It invites us to meet the present moment with acceptance,ย  gratitude, and a sense of โ€œenoughness.โ€

Thankful
What Santosha Looks Like on the Mat
  • Softening ambitionย
  • Using props without judgmentย
  • Choosing breath over forceย
  • Resting in Childโ€™s Pose when needed
  • Ending practice with appreciation for your body
How We Cultivate Gratitude Through Contentment

Modern Yoga Teacher Jamie encourages a simple daily shift:ย

โ€œVerbally express your gratitude more often. Actually say the words โ€˜thank you.โ€™ Noticeย  the response, the happiness that comes from it. It resonatesโ€ฆ and it leaves you feelingย  just a little lighter as you go about your day.โ€ย

Modern Yoga Teacher Rita cultivates gratitude by focusing on whatโ€™s present ratherย  than whatโ€™s missing:ย

โ€œGratitude is an attitudeโ€”focus on what you have versus what you lack.โ€ย

She shared how she taught this mindset to her boys; reframing comparison intoย  appreciation. Today, they celebrate othersโ€™ accomplishments without envy, rooted inย  gratitude. Rita also keeps a gratitude journal, writes โ€œlife lessonsโ€ for her granddaughter,ย  practices minimalism, and limits social media to reduce comparison and turn awarenessย  inward.ย

Modern Yoga Teacher Carrie uses perspective as her anchor:ย

โ€œThe mindset shift that helps me stay grounded in gratitude is reframing obligations as โ€˜Iย  get toโ€™ versus โ€˜I have to.โ€™ Focusing on the fact that many people would long to be in theย  position Iโ€™m in helps me continue to be grateful for what I have.โ€ย

Through Santosha, we learn that happiness doesnโ€™t need to be earned or chasedโ€” sometimes it appears the moment we stop striving.

Tapas: Self-Discipline & Inner Fire

The third Niyama, Tapas, comes from a Sanskrit word meaning โ€œheatโ€ or โ€œburning.โ€ย  Tapas is the discipline that transforms intention into growth. It strengthens our will,ย  deepens our resilience, and expands our gratitude for the effort behind our progress.

How Tapas Shows Up (On and Off the Mat)
  1. Physical Austerity – Holding poses longer, embracing challenge, or reducing restย  builds strength and resilience.ย

Off the mat, Tapas looks like sitting with discomfort instead of avoiding itโ€”much likeย  finding your edge in a yin pose. When we stay present, weโ€™re more aware of theย  support, growth, and gratitude available to us.ย ย

  1. Mental Focus – Breathwork, mantra, or single-pointed concentration help settle theย  mind.ย

This discipline creates space for gratitude to grow, and helps us release negative loopsย  when they arise.ย

  1. Commitment to Practice โ€“ Consistency, whether through yoga, meditation, journaling,ย  prayer, or any daily ritual; anchors gratitude.ย

Mary Beth ERYT-500

Modern Yoga Teacher Mary Beth offers a beautiful way to view practice:ย

โ€œThink of your practice as a ritualโ€”a dedicated time and space set aside to cultivateย  gratitude.โ€ย

Modern Yoga Teacher Victor leans into Tapas through โ€œvoluntary adversityโ€:

โ€œEngaging in voluntary challenges during my practice helps me stay present and trulyย  appreciate what I have.โ€ย

Off the mat, Victor maintains daily mobility work:ย

โ€œIt fosters gratitude, respect, and honor for my body and its capabilities.โ€

Tapas teaches that disciplined effort can deepen gratitude by showing us what weโ€™reย  capable ofโ€”and who we become through the work.ย

Living Gratitude Through Santosha + Tapas

Together, Santosha and Tapas help us balance ease with effort, contentment withย  discipline, and presence with purposeful action. These Niyamas remind us that gratitudeย  is more than a feeling; itโ€™s a way of living, shaped by how we meet each momentโ€”bothย  the soft ones and the fiery ones.
