Our Community Made this Anniversary Possible

“Community is much more than belonging to something; its about doing something together that makes belonging matter.” – Brian Solis

According to tradition, gifts of candy, iron, and wood are appropriate for 6 year anniversaries. Candy represents the sweetness of the relationship, iron symbolizes durability, and wood to illustrate resilency. Amethyst is the stone that accompanies a celebration of 6 years. It is considered a stone of protection, calmness, and bravery. The Calla Lily is the 6 year flower symbolizing growth, beauty, and wisdom.

Thank you for carrying us into our 6th year. James and I owe our teachers, Mary Beth, Kim, Suzi, Jamie, Patty, Jenny, Natalie, Becky, Leah, Colleen, Danielle, Sarah, Mel, and Cyndi as well as every person who steps on a mat in our studio candy, iron, wood, amethysts, and lilies. You are resilient, calm, brave, beautiful, and wise.

This year is significant to us because we’re on solid ground. 2020 sent shockwaves of the unknown well into it’s future. We were overjoyed to have our doors open last year, but this year we have a renewed sense of strength and are pushing forward with confident determination.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Teaching yoga is a gift, and sometimes it humbles me so much that I feel completely unqualified and completely empowered at the same time. At the beginning of every class I teach, I take a breath and consciously surrender to the moment, then I watch the journey of the class unfold like a beautiful, unique piece of art.

I am forever grateful to have the opportunity to teach at Modern Yoga. -Joyce

Modern Yoga is turning 6! This coming August I will be teaching there for 5 years. Time has flown by. I feel as if the studio has grown so much in building a loyal, supportive and ever-growing community. James and Joyce have worked tirelessly in meeting the needs of our clients and teachers. There have been many successes and many challenges, but overall we have flourished as a yoga studio, a school and as a place to feel support and guidance.
Being a teacher at MY has taught ME so much! I learn something new every single time I teach. It has been a pleasure watching our clients navigate their yoga journey. Some have been with us since the beginning, some have gone and come back to us, many new faces arrive daily because we are who we are and offer what we do. I appreciate each student and the relationships I’ve forged throughout this amazing time at Modern Yoga.
I look forward to what’s in store as we continue to grow and develop into an even bigger and better studio! -Kim

My gratitude towards the Modern Yoga Community is never ending. I was fortunate enough to stumble upon the studio (almost) 3 years ago and it continues to bring new joys, connections, lessons and opportunities I never saw coming. Joyce, James, our amazing instructors and of course our incredible community of yogis have played a major role in my growth as a student and a teacher. It’s been such a rewarding experience to be able to teach and give back even a fraction of what you all have given me. Cheers to 6 years and to many more! James & Joyce, you should be SO proud of what you’ve built…the studio and the community are one of a kind and I think I can safely speak for the masses when I say we’re all grateful to have found you! Happy 6th Anniversary!   -Jamie

suzi modern yoga

Teaching at modern yoga has allowed me to be a part of the change I experienced myself.  Before practicing yoga, I worked out in different ways by running and lifting weights. I came to modern yoga for a different workout.  Then I discovered yoga – modern yoga. It’s more than a great workout, it’s a way of dealing with hard things.  Challenging yourself and breathing through the challenge is the best lesson. Practicing yoga made a difference in the way I see things and react to adversity.  I want everyone to have the tools I learned from practicing yoga.  -Suzi

Teaching at Modern Yoga really means so much to me. I would not have been able to go through teacher training  if it wasn’t for James and Joyce and their teacher training program. I had hoped from day one to teach prenatal yoga and being a part of Modern Yoga has allowed me not only to do that but gain so much confidence in myself and my practice. I couldn’t imagine a better or more supportive team and community to be a part of. I am so thankful to be part of the Modern Yoga teaching team and family! -Leah

What hits me right now is that there’s such a fluidity between teachers and students, it feels like we all just practice yoga together at different times and the line between “teacher” and yogi seems very blurry to me. The Modern Yoga community feels like a very informal and casual town hall, general store, post office, clinic. -MB

Teaching at Modern Yoga is honestly a dream come true for me. I would never have imagined myself passionate about yoga, much less teaching it weekly. I was in the midst of losing myself in motherhood and struggling with a very negative body image when I stumbled through the doors for the first time. I am beyond grateful for James and Joyce and the training, knowledge and passion they have for the practice. I am grateful that they gave my hot mess mom self a chance to deepen my practice and share my love for it with others. Modern Yoga feels like a family to me. Everyone is welcome, we all bring our own weird quirks and unique gifts but we come as equals. It’s all about the practice and honoring yourself as you are each day … Happy Anniversary, MY! -Sarah

Two things ring true of the yoga and the people at Modern Yoga, warmth and flow. When I was eager to start my teacher training I inquired at many places and none were as inviting or flexible for my lifestyle as Modern. Joyce’s warmth is stedfast in all her interactions and that echos throughout the studio. James and Joyce have built a strong community of yogis, teachers and students and I’m thrilled to be a little part of the story. -Mel

Teaching at Modern Yoga allows me to share my love of yoga with others.  I enjoy finding new ways to link poses together & to flow in class from one shape to the next following the rhythm of our breath.  I love challenging my fellow yogis both in a physical way & a mindful way.  I feel so privileged to be able to guide students through class & arrive at end of class more relaxed physically & mentally than when they walked through the door.  I love the teachers here & how I continue to learn from them & find new inspiration from them. They are such a supportive, knowledgeable group & I feel lucky to be a part of the Modern Yoga team.  -Becky
