Teacher Spotlight Series

Megan McCormick

Health & wellness were always a part of the plan for this month’s Modern Yoga Teacher Spotlight — meet Megan McCormick!!
Prior to becoming an instructor, Megan studied Nutrition & Dietetics at Bowling Green State then went on to receive her Master’s in Nutrition; specializing in research, from Case Western University. Since then she’s worked as a Registered Dietician in hospitals focusing on Long-Term care.

Megan’s journey into yoga started with a need for change from her normal routine and led her into more than she ever expected. Here’s here story…

“My yoga practice began the same way most’s do, I came for the workout but I ended up staying for the yoga. During a summer home from college, I decided I needed a replacement for my usual gym routine and yoga was calling my name. I started googling studios and my gut told me to try Modern Yoga — and let me tell you, that was something!!

A friend of mine agreed to try it with me and about 20 minutes into the class she glanced at me and whispered ‘this is great!!’ Meanwhile, all I could think about was how I was going to survive. It was my very first class — and I intended on it being my last! At the end of class my friend signed up for the New Client Special and I decided to follow her lead… mainly for the lavender scented towels.

It wasn’t until 2019 when I started practicing consistently. Life got pretty sad and I was in a dark place, but yoga showed me that I could push through it. I will be forever grateful for those first few teachers who molded the start of my practice and for the teachers that continue to help shape who I am.”

What inspired you to become a yoga teacher?

“I never thought I would become a yoga instructor at the beginning of my practice, but I’ve known my whole life that I’ve wanted to teach…I just couldn’t picture myself in a classroom. After consistently practicing for a few years, I felt this nudge to enroll in teacher training. I was still in school studying to be a dietician, but once I passed my exam I decided to trust my gut and signed up!”

What is one piece of advice for your students?

“Go to yoga! Even on your lazy days — I never leave a class feeling worse than when I showed up!Β Also, try something new — even if that means modifiying the pose. I’ve found I love the modifications of some asanas (poses) more than the traditional variation. It may be a phase, but it’s one that I honor.”

What’s Your Favorite Asana?

“Half Moon and all of the different ways you can practice it. It was the first ‘difficult’ pose I was able to find and it’s just always held a special place in my heart since then.”

What inspires you to get on your mat?

“I love the breath-to-movement connection. I’ve also never been naturally flexible so it’s a great feeling to know the progress I’ve made and the mystery of where my practice will go. I’m also inspired by my teachers — each have something unique and special they bring to their class and I hate missing the opportunity to practice and learn from them.”

What are your passions outside of yoga?

“I really love reading books, enjoying espresso martinis or mojitos with friends, shopping, seeing musicals at Playhouse Square or cuddling up with Jake and the cats to watch funny movies.”

Just for fun…do you have any irrational fears?

“I’m afraid of aliens. I watched the movie ‘Signs’ as a kid, since then I have not and will not watch another movie about aliens or outer space in general.”

Speaking of supernatural…if you could have any super power what would it be?

“I wish I could apparate like they do in Harry Potter — whenever I’m running late I always wish I could magically transport myself to where I need to be so I’d arrive early instead of late.”

I think we all would love that! Last question…what are a few songs we’d find on the soundtrack to your life?Β

“I’m a total Swiftie and there are a lot of her songs I relate to, but I think you’d currently find ‘The Albatross’ on there — along with ‘All the Small Things’ by Blink 182 and ‘It Don’t Hurt Like It Used To’ by Billy Currington!
