Warrior II – Virabhadrasana II

Warrior II Pose, or Virabhadrasana II in Sanskrit, is a foundational standing yoga posture that embodies strength, stability, and focus and is the second of this month’s Warrior Series. This pose is a fundamental part of many yoga sequences and offers a variety of physical, mental, and emotional benefits.

Finding the pose…

Begin in a wide stance, with one foot facing forward near the top corner of your mat and the back foot facing directly outward near the back of your mat. Check in with the following alignment…

1. Plant your front foot with all toes facing forward, bend your knee to stack directly over your ankle or slightly behind it. 

2. Your back foot should be facing directly away from your mat and your arch should be in line with your front heel. Press into the outer knife edge of your back foot to engage your back leg. 

3. Squeeze your shoulder blades together to draw in and upward for good spinal alignment.

4. Allow your shoulders to pull back and down away from your ears and you lengthen both arms out in opporsite directions. 

5. Softly gaze over your front middle finger for your Drishti.

Pose Benefits…

  • Strengthens the legs, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteal muscles. Additionally, the pose engages the core muscles, shoulders, and arms, promoting overall strength and stability.
  • Improves posture by focusing on the alignment of hips, shoulders & overall spine. 
  • Encourages openness in the hips and chest, relieving tension accumulated from prolonged periods of sitting.
  • The focused gaze (drishti) cultivates concentration and mental clarity, promoting mindfulness.
  • Consistent practice of Warrior 2 Pose improves balance and stability, both physically and mentally. Holding the pose builds endurance and stamina, enhancing physical resilience.
